Tea rings with sesame and poppy seeds have a long history in Slavic cuisine and culture. Initially, bagels were made from dough intended for storage for the winter. It was believed that if the finished product broke into four parts when pressed, it means that the ingredients were selected in the correct proportion.

When preparing bagels, poppy seeds or sesame seeds are often added, and less often, vanilla or nut flour. The bagels with poppy seeds has a special aroma and crispy dough. 

Bagels were the most popular flour products in Rus'. The walls were decorated with them, emphasizing the beauty.
