The Borsec springs are located in north-eastern Romania, in the Borsec basin, Harghita county, in the heart of the Carpathian Mountains. The Borsec spa is located at an altitude of 900 meters, and the vast coniferous forest that surrounds it provides its beneficial microclimate. There are more than 15 natural springs of mineral water. The group of springs is associated with the Borsec basin, dating back to the Pliocene. The deposits in this basin contain crystalline rocks in layers in the epizone, superimposed patches of sedimentary rocks (Triassic dolomite limestone), covered by deposits of conglomerates and sandstones, clays and clayey marls. The Quaternary layers are made up of peat and travertine deposits. Waters from crystalline rocks can circulate, accumulate and mineralize, passing through cracks in the massive crystalline rocks of the Ribra or through lithological contact surfaces. The mineralization of these types of waters depends on the dynamic activity of the waters. The carbon dioxide content, which is crucial for maintaining the chemical balance between calcium, magnesium and sodium bicarbonate compounds, comes from the mofette ring in the Harghit-Calimani chain.
