Lollipops are a very old concept: as far back as prehistoric times, people would coat sticks with honey and lick them, while in ancient Egypt, China, and Arab lands, fruits and nuts were coated in honey and skewered on sticks to avoid getting one's hands sticky. The "modern" industrial format—hard candy on a wooden or paper stick—emerged in the United States in the early 20th century.
